Each of the 9 planets rules a fixed number of years (Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 = 120). The starting lord is determined by your janma nakshatra; the balance uses the fraction of the nakshatra remaining at birth.
