What is a havan?

A havan is a fire ritual where offerings (samagri) are placed into the sacred fire (agni) with mantras. Agni is the divine messenger — it carries the offerings to the devas.

Samagri

  • Havan kund + wooden logs (samidha)1 + 21 logs
  • Ghee (cow ghee)500 ml
  • Hawan samagri mix500 g
  • Til, jau, akshat, ricesmall bowls
  • Coconut (for purnahuti)1
  • Kapoor + agarbatti1 each

Procedure

  1. Place havan kund on the ground; arrange logs in a lattice.
  2. Kindle with kapoor and dry twigs; recite Agni mantra.
  3. Offer ghee with "स्वाहा" after each mantra — starting with Ganapati.
  4. Recite the main mantra (e.g. Mahamrityunjaya, Gayatri) with 108 or 1008 ahutis.
  5. Conclude with purnahuti — a full coconut and vastra offered together.
  6. Distribute vibhuti (havan ash) as prasad.

Safety

  • Perform in a well-ventilated space; keep water nearby.
  • Do not use flammable synthetic clothing.
  • Never leave the kund unattended till fully cooled.
